INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION

  1. This question paper consists of TWO sections:
    SECTION A: Essay (50)
    SECTION B: Transactional texts (2 x 25) (50)
  2. Answer ONE question from SECTION A and TWO from SECTION B.
  3. Write in the language in which you are being assessed.
  4. Start EACH section on a NEW page.
  5. You must plan (e.g. use a mind map/diagram/flow chart/key words, etc.), edit and proofread your work. The planning must appear BEFORE the answer.
  6. All planning must be clearly indicated as such. It is advisable to draw a line across all planning.
  7. You are strongly advised to spend approximately:
    • 80 minutes on SECTION A
    • 70 minutes on SECTION B (2 × 35 minutes)
  8. Number the answers correctly according to the numbering system used in this question paper.
  9. Give each response a suitable title/heading, as indicated by the question.
    NOTE: The title/heading must NOT be considered when doing a word count.
  10. Write neatly and legibly.

  • Write an essay of 400–450 words (2–2½ pages) on ONE of the following topics.
  • Write down the NUMBER and TITLE/HEADING of your essay.

2.1 LETTER TO THE EDITOR
16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, held annually from 25 November to 10 December, is a worldwide campaign to highlight and oppose violence against women and children.
Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper in which you express your opinion about the campaign. [25]
2.2 INTERVIEW
A learner at your school has won a national award for his/her invention which is eco-friendly yet controversial.
As the editor of your school newspaper, you have been tasked to conduct an interview with the learner. Write the interview which will appear in your school newspaper. [25]
2.3 FORMAL SPEECH
“STOP CALLING ME THAT!”
Don’t let the labels other people give you define you.

There have been many incidents of learners complaining about labelling and stereotyping. You are the chairperson of the “Teenagers who Care” society at your school and the principal has asked you to address the learners during a special assembly.
Use the above heading and subheading as inspiration for your speech. [25]
2.4 OBITUARY
A councillor who played an important role at your school, but who also had a damaged reputation, has died during an accident in which two other people also lost their lives.
As the chairperson of the Student Representative Council, you have been asked to write his/her obituary on behalf of the learners of the school. [25]
2.5 FORMAL REPORT
Recycling is one of the best ways of protecting the environment. Your principal has asked you to investigate the possibility of implementing an effective recycling programme at your school.
Draw up the report which you will submit to your principal. [25]

Do you want to take a gap year, travel around the world and make a difference at the same time?
Join us, Teenagers for a Greener Earth, as we spread the message of the importance of conservation. We will travel throughout Africa, Europe and Asia, visiting some of the poorest countries in the world. The purpose is to bring the message of conservation, preservation and recycling to these areas. Part of the experience will include helping to build dams and classrooms.
Only 25 suitable candidates will be interviewed for this unique opportunity.
You will need the following:

  • Financial support
  • Fun-loving, friendly personality
  • Good people skills
  • Good health
