INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION

  1. This question paper consists of THREE sections:
    SECTION A: Essay (50)
    SECTION B: Longer Transactional Text (30)
    SECTION C: Shorter Transactional Text (20)
  2. Answer ONE question from EACH section.
  3. Write in the language in which you are being assessed.
  4. Start EACH section on a NEW page.
  5. You must plan (e.g. using a mind map / diagram / flow chart / key words, etc.), edit and proofread your work. The plan must appear BEFORE each text.
  6. All planning must be clearly indicated. It is advisable to draw a line through all planning.
  7. You are strongly advised to spend approximately:
    • 80 minutes on SECTION A
    • 40 minutes on SECTION B
    • 30 minutes on SECTION C
  8. Number the answers correctly according to the numbering system used in this question paper.
  9. Give each response a suitable title/heading.
  10. Do NOT consider the title/heading when doing a word count.
  11. Write neatly and legibly.

SECTION A: ESSAY
QUESTION 1

  • Write an essay of between 250 and 300 words in length on ONE of the following topics.
  • Write down the number and title of the essay you have chosen correctly, for example 1.1 Who am I?
  • Give your OWN title if your choice is QUESTION 1.7.1 OR 1.7.2.
  • Spend approximately 80 minutes on this section.

  • Respond to ONE of the following transactional writing texts.
  • The body of your response should be between 120 and 150 words in length.
  • Write down the number and the heading of the text you have chosen, for example 2.1 FORMAL LETTER TO THE PRESS.
  • Pay particular attention to format, language and register.
  • Spend approximately 40 minutes on this section.

2.1 FORMAL LETTER TO THE PRESS
Recently your area was visited by the Minister of Human Settlements. He/She came to speak to the community about a project in which new houses will be built in your area. However, the area is environmentally sensitive as there are indigenous trees and wildlife that will suffer.
Write a letter to the editor of the Daily Dispatch, a newspaper in East London and express your concerns about the destruction the project is likely to cause to the environment. [30]

2.2 CURRICULUM VITAE (CV) AND COVERING LETTER
Read the following job advertisement and write a short curriculum vitae (CV) and covering letter for the position being advertised.
HOLIDAY JOB FOR STUDENTS
We are looking for dedicated, passion-driven and motivated students aged between 17 and 22 years. They are going to market our company in our town and surrounding suburbs and townships.

Prospective applicants should meet the following requirements: you should currently be studying. You must be fluent in at least two official languages inclusive of English. No previous work experience is needed, but those studying marketing will have an added advantage.

2.3 INFORMAL REPORT
Young people in your area have started an awareness campaign about the problem of woman and child abuse. You have visited many homes, hospitals and other institutions to spread the message about how vulnerable women and children should be protected against abuse.
Write a report in which you outline how the campaign has been carried out and the success that has been achieved. Also point out your challenges. [30]
2.4 SPEECH
A learner from your school has been chosen to take part in a national sports competition that takes place in Cape Town. You were asked to speak on the occasion to wish him/her well. In your presentation, point out the benefits he/she will get for doing well in the competition.

  • Choose ONE of the following topics and write a short text.

3.1 INVITATION CARD
You are the secretary of a youth club that has decided to honour the elderly people in your community by organising a dinner party for them. The plan is to make this a memorable occasion – one to remember for a long time. Write out the invitation to the elderly people and other guests you intend to invite to the dinner party.
NOTE: No marks are awarded for drawings and illustrations. [20]

3.2 DIARY ENTRY
Recently you were invited to an interview by the company to which you applied for a bursary to further your studies in 2019.
Write two diary entries in which you indicate your feelings BEFORE and AFTER the interview. [20]

3.3 INSTRUCTIONS
Many young people are becoming victims of rape and other crimes. This is as a result of relationships they form with strangers on social networking sites.
With the above in mind, write a set of instructions for young people on how to protect themselves from being victims of crimes resulting from social networking activities. [20]
